IVY RIOT
Ivy Riot! Unleashing QTPOC power through music, workshops and community!
IVY RIOT! will be a Queer focused, month long wellness and development program which includes but not limited to, LGBTQIA+ live music events, comedy shows, activist panels, job fairs and mental health support workshops. Ivy Room’s program will be held in and around the month of June 2024 in celebration of Pride. We wholeheartedly desire to be the hub for the LGBTQIA+ community in the Bay Area and strongly believe in the necessity of having a safe open space to belong to.
For more information about the series and our calendar, please visit the series page.
SKIP THE NEEDLE
Skip The Needle is an Oakland-based queer female quartet made up of musical superstars of the Bay Area; Vicki Randle (The Tonight Show, Mavis Staples), Shelley Doty (Shelley Doty X- Tet, Jambay), Kofy Brown (Kofy Brown Band, Sistas in the Pit) and Katie Cash (Katie Cash Band, Year of the Fist). Together, they make politically astute, rock n’ roll-funk. Their songs are musically diverse and carry a strong, socially conscious message, delivered with extreme joy. Formed in 2014, Skip The Needle has released two full-length albums and their latest EP - Octavia Of Earth, Volume 2, inspired by black feminist icon Octavia E. Butler, released on Soulectric - A division of Little Village Foundation in Fall of 2023. The band just wrapped a 2 month, entirely sold out run, of Hedwig and The Angry Inch at Shotgun Players in Berkeley, CA and have some new projects in the works for 2024.
"I had never heard anything like it... the power they gave to the audience, the energy up there, was life changing." - JD Samson (Le Tigre, MEN), Tom Tom Magazine
“The spirit of collaboration, communication, and freedom is contagious, and as the band’s live shows and quickly growing following can attest, there’s clearly a need for it now more than ever.” - D. Scot Miller (Editor in Chief), East Bay Express
GROOBLEN
Channeling experimental psychedelic cabaret dreampunk into her performance alter-ego, Grooblen, San Francisco's Ellie Stokes’ healing work braids themes that are reflective, surreal, pensive, and whimsical. Inspired by musical artists Queens Of The Stone Age, Fiona Apple, Frank Zappa, Jeff Buckley, and Genesis, critics have described as "a playful and genre-diverse style of art pop, pulling from psychedelic cabaret arrangements, jazz pop, and surreal rock stylings.” (Under the Radar Mag)
Grooblen- a band described by Psychedelic Scene as the “originators” of “psychedelic-cabaret-dream-pop-punk,”- continues to shine with the members’ individual talents: Drummer Sean Aaron and guitarist Spencer Lay spring out with intricate rhythms and melodies, joining the orchestral swell of Alejandro Lara-Agraz on bass, Eva Gogas contributing vocals, Jack Lillian mixing in guest bass and vocals, and Stokes’ lead vocal slashing through with equal parts power and delicate sadness.
As Stokes explains, “there’s been a lot more collaboration with coming up with how we can build new atmospheres in different songs, I feel like ‘Reversed Sky’ and ‘Egg Freeze’ are two new songs that compliment each other in a psychedelically funky, grunge and proggy sort of way.”
